Hartford, Connecticut, Thursday, December 18, 2003: The Archdiocese of Hartford has a new leader. Archbishop Henry J. Mansell was installed at 2:00 p.m. today as the fourth Archbishop of Hartford in a special Mass at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, installed Archbishop Mansell, the former Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, NY. Archbishop Montalvo presided over the Mass with Cardinals Edward Egan, Archbishop of New York, and Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, D.C., 55 Bishops, and 337 priests traveling from as far as Michigan. Also in attendance were 152 deacons, 21 civic leaders including Governor John Rowland, 15 ecumenical leaders, 86 representatives from religious communities, 142 people representing schools and universities throughout the archdiocese, 65 representatives of archdiocesan agencies and 93 persons from organizations such as the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of Peter Claver.
